Né le 26 juillet 1922 à Tulsa dans l'Oklahoma (Etats-Unis), Blake Edwards débute à l'âge de vingt-trois ans comme acteur. Il travaille sur des fictions de radio puis comme réalisateur à la télévision, où il rencontre le musicien Henry Mancini qui composera des années plus tard l'air de La Panthère rose. Issu du sérail hollywoodien, Blake Edwards se tourne naturellement vers le 7e art, réalisant son premier long métrage Bring Your Smile Around en 1955. « J'ai été élevé dans une famille du cinéma, expliquait le cinéaste en 2004. Mon père était chargé de production et premier assistant réalisateur. Et mon grand-père était sans doute le plus grand réalisateur de son temps.
